Social entrepreneurship is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary practice that combines traditional business and finance principles with expertise from fields as diverse as agriculture, medicine, law, engineering, environmental studies and sociology. The efforts of social entrepreneurs attempt to address problems such as poverty, hunger, disease, pollution, illiteracy, and inadequate housing in developing areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The result of these efforts is often a new business model for improved economic development and enhanced quality of life in a particular cultural setting. Strategic partnerships contribute to the success of such social enterprises through connections with government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), relief agencies, microfinance institutions, and human rights groups in varied cultural settings.
